Overview
Intro
Hop on the historic steam train and ride along the Furka mountain route between the cantons of Uri and Valais. The 18-kilometer cogwheel route takes you through gorges and past the Rhone Glacier to over 2000 meters.
The Furka Mountain Steam Railway at a glance
The cogwheel railway connects Realp in the canton of Uri with Oberwald in Valais. Some steam locomotives and wagons that are over 100 years old are in use on the line. The highest point is at Furka station at 2160 meters. The train runs from June to October.
What to experience
Ride along the Furka Mountain Route (2 hours)
Hop on the steam train in Realp and ride up the steep cogwheel track to Furka station at 2160 meters. Through the 1874-meter-long tunnel you get into Valais, past the Rhone Glacier and through the Rotten Gorge to Oberwald. On the way, with a bit of luck, you will see marmots and alpine roses in the mountain landscape.
- Good to know: In the steam train, reservation is mandatory and included in the surcharge.
- Tip: The train stops at Furka station for 20 minutes – enough time for a drink and photos.
