Snowshoe tour of the Graubünden Dolomites
Intro
The wonderful view of the impressive limestone rock faces of the Rätikon makes for an exhilarating moment you won’t soon forget on this snowshoe tour. The trail will take you from the Mottis mountain hut, over the slopes of the Stelserberg to St. Antönien. The trail is well signposted and takes around four hours.
Description
The trail starts at the Mottis mountain hut, which can be reached by PostBus from Schiers train station. Subject to weather conditions, it is also possible to get there by car. If you’re in need of sustenance before the walk, you’ll enjoy the nut croissants baked in the hut’s kitchens. And if you decide to take the same way back at any point along the route, you can also enjoy an afternoon on the sun terrace and a delicious meal.
The first two kilometres along the pink markings are fairly gentle. The trail only starts to get a little steeper once the snow-covered Stelsersee comes into view. As you climb higher, the view opens up until you can see the entire Rätikon with its striking peaks. At 2,042m above sea level, the Gafäll peak, which is the highest point on the trail, is reached after a total of four kilometres. The Vilan, Sassauna and Schesplana peaks are almost 2,000m above the valley floor and draw the eye as if by magic. On the opposite side, the view extends as far as the mountains of the Gotthard Massif 100km away. St. Antönien, the final destination for this hike, is much closer. The descent first leads across broad snow fields, then through wooded areas, and finally via the Michelshof mountain inn to the centre of St. Antönien. The Valais village itself is the starting point for a number of other fantastic winter experiences, far from the tourist hotspots.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
