The Montreux Riviera is beautifully situated between the UNESCO-recognised terraced vineyards of Lavaux and Lake Geneva. The local mountain Rochers-de-Naye can be reached from the valley stop in Montreux train station itself.

This route snakes its way through the famous terraced vineyards of Lavaux, which number among the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Shaped by man over time, the landscape with its typical winegrowing villages is stunning. We recommend the numerous wine cellars such as the Domaine Croix Dublex in Lavaux, where you can sample selected wines.

For a change of scenery, simply board the bus or train that runs regularly between the villages of Lavaux. After arriving in Lutry, we took a train to Territet and enjoyed some unforgettable views along the way.

In Territet, we took the the funicular railway to Glion. Built in 1883, it’s the third oldest of its kind in Switzerland. In Glion, we then boarded the cog railway to Rochers-de-Naye.

Rochers-de-Naye is the local mountain of Montreux. The rock massif rises up to 2,041 metres above sea level and is made of limestone. From Montreux or Glion, the ancient cog railway (1892) winds its way up steeply to the Rochers-de-Naye.

The view of Lake Geneva during the cog railway trip is spectacular, but the four loop tunnels can be confusing, with the lake switching from one side to the other each time!

On the way to the Rochers-de-Naye, we stopped off at the quaint little Buvette de Jaman. Numerous local delicacies are served here, including fondue originating from the cheese dairy of the same name. The perfect accompaniment: a glass of Montreux white wine.

Curious marmots are already waiting as you arrive at Rochers-de-Naye and allow you to get up close. Normally almost impossible to see in nature, here they are trusting and playful.

Nestled between two outcrops above the gorge of Rochers-de-Naye lies the Alpine garden of La Rambertia. It bears its name in memory of the Swiss poet and writer Eugène Rambert, who was a great nature lover and closely associated with the town of Montreux. This extraordinary garden, surrounded by an immense panorama, has a fascinating charm.

The Geneva-based botanist Henry Correvon founded the Alpine garden in 1896 with the aim of learning more about the development of Alpine flowers. La Rambertia is home to and protects more than a thousand species of plants and Alpine flowers, not to mention one of the emblems of Switzerland – the famous Edelweiss. The Alpine garden was laid out around a high rock, around which there is a 400-metre long path with a stunning panorama. In clear conditions, you can even see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

We travelled back to Montreux by cog railway and treated ourselves to a trip on the Belle Époque steamboat across Lake Geneva.

In addition to a spectacular sunset, we could choose between a delicious aperitif with a glass of local wine on deck or a “filet de perche” in the elegant Belle Époque restaurant. Decisions, decisions...
