Bahnhofstrasse – Zurich’s shopping boulevard
Overview
Intro
Discover Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich's most famous street: On 1.4 kilometres from the main train station to Lake Zurich, you will walk past fashion chains, watch and jewellry stores – and Paradeplatz, the financial centre of Switzerland.
Bahnhofstrasse Zurich at a glance
Bahnhofstrasse Zurich stretches 1.4 kilometres from the main railway station to Lake Zurich. The largely car-free street is one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world. The closer to the lake, the more exclusive the shops become. The Paradeplatz, about halfway, is considered a symbol of the Swiss financial centre.
What to experience
Walking and shopping
From the main station towards the lake, fashion chains, watch and jewellery shops as well as department stores alternate. You can walk the distance in about 20 minutes – if you stop at the boutiques, it will of course take longer. On the way, the historic Augustinergasse branches off and leads you directly into Zurich's Old Town.
- Good to know: The shops are closed on Sundays.
- Tip: With the Zürich Card, you can travel free of charge on the tram along Bahnhofstrasse.
Take a break at Confiserie Sprüngli
Paradeplatz is located about halfway along Bahnhofstrasse and is a busy tram junction. Make a stop at Confiserie Sprüngli and taste the world-famous Luxemburgerli. From the café you have a great view of the square and the passing trams – in warm weather the terrace outside beckons.
- Good to know: Café Sprüngli is open daily, including Sundays.
- Tip: On Sundays, the café is particularly popular for its Sunday brunch (reservation).
Walk to Lake Zurich
At the end of Bahnhofstrasse you will reach Bürkliplatz on Lake Zurich. Here you can take a break, watch the swans or take the boat for a round trip on the lake. You want to continue walking? From Bürkliplatz, the magnificent lakeside promenade continues towards the Zürichhorn and Enge.
- Good to know: Tickets for the Lake Zurich ships are available directly at Bürkliplatz.
