Exhibition: From Stone to Images
Overview
Intro
Rediscovering Another Way of Creating Images
An Exploration of the Role of Lithography in the Contemporary Era
At a time when images circulate without weight or materiality, the Alexis Forel Museum takes a different approach. The exhibition From Stone to Image invites visitors to slow down, to touch with their eyes, and to return to the very source of the creative gesture. Lithography is no longer merely an artistic technique; it becomes an imprint, a trace of the body, the hand, and pressure itself. Where digital technologies erase irregularities and accidents, the lithographic stone reveals them, asserting its strength and imposing its own temporality.
The exhibition brings together two emblematic workshops: Idem Paris, heir to the great Parisian printing studios and an international laboratory where artists and new technologies engage in dialogue, and Raynald Métraux Workshop in Lausanne, where every print is guided by the highest standards of patience and precision. Following its collaboration on the museum’s 2018 exhibition dedicated to the work of David Lynch, Idem Paris returns to continue this dialogue between gesture, material, and image.
Two cultures, two rhythms, one shared principle: the image is born above all through contact.
Minimalism and monumentality, introspection and pop culture, silence and brilliance: the exhibition’s selection of artists forms a palette of contrasts and experimentation, reflecting both passion and sensitivity. Structured around four themes—gesture and imprint, narrative and poetry, memory and time, duality and modernity—the exhibition presents lithography as a creative laboratory between the visible and the invisible, tradition and innovation.
The exhibition demonstrates that an image can be slow, dense, embodied, and resistant. More than a medium, lithography is both an act of thought and thought in action. In a dematerialized world, the exhibition affirms that the image can still be slow, dense, embodied, and resistant.
