Intro
In the middle of central Switzerland, the Bürgenstock cable car takes you 440 metres in altitude up to the Bürgenstock in just a few minutes. Once at the top, you have a fantastic view of Lake Lucerne, Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus.
The Bürgenstock Funicular at a glance
The Bürgenstock Funicular connects the Kehrsiten boat station on Lake Lucerne with the Bürgenstock Resort at 874 metres. The funicular, which opened in 1888, was the first in the world with an electric drive. After a complete renovation, it has been in operation all year round since 2017.
What to experience
Ride on the Bürgenstock Funicular (4 minutes)
Sit in one of the nostalgically designed wooden wagons and drive almost a kilometre uphill. The gradient reaches up to 58 percent. During the journey, the view of Lake Lucerne becomes wider and wider. The mountain station leads directly to the Bürgenstock Resort. From here, the view extends over the lake to the Rigi.
- Good to know: Tickets can be booked online to avoid waiting times.
- Tip: Sit with your back to the mountain for maximum views.
Arrival with the MS Bürgenstock catamaran (25 minutes)
Start your journey at the jetty in Lucerne, just a few minutes' walk from the train station. The catamaran takes you across Lake Lucerne to Kehrsiten in 25 minutes. From there you change directly to the Bürgenstock cable car.
- Good to know: The catamaran operates all year round from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Tip: Combine ship and train into one return ticket.
