Aare Canoe
Overview
Intro
You glide on calm waters at the south foot of the Jura, past the storks at Altreu and lovely islands to reach your stage point, the baroque «open-air museum» of Solothurn.
Description
Having left the small town of Büren an der Aare, the Aare meanders before you, flowing very slowly in countless bends towards Solothurn. Following the rather straight course on the Nidau-Büren canal, the river landscape now becomes truly natural. There are many designated nature conservation areas located along the shore. Among other animals, these are home to beavers, who like to keep to themselves, so please don’t get too close. It’s not possible to drift with the current here as the water practically stands still – this section calls for paddling. Always be alert when paddling, as passenger boats run up until you reach Solothurn.
Grenchen is located by the first bridge, but is not visible from the river. Nestled at the southern foot of the Jura mountains, the only indications of the town famous for clockmaking are the planes taking off from the nearby airport. However, follow two right-hand bends, passing the impressive motorway suspension bridge, and a worthwhile detour awaits: the Altreu stork colony. On the left-hand side is a campsite where you can dock. At the information centre, you can learn all about the life and re-settlement of the white stork in Switzerland.
After a well-earned break, the Aare winds gently on, splits and forms the Aare Inseli. This idyllic island is inhabited by a farming family. Shortly afterwards, St. Ursus Cathedral in Solothurn is visible on the horizon of the flat Swiss Plateau. Numerous bridges signal the awaiting city, before you suddenly you find yourself surrounded by grand Baroque buildings that lie right on the water’s edge. Dock on the left-hand side after the final bridge and you’ll find the open-air exhibition that is Solothurn Old Town.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
