Intro

In the highest part of the Emmental Valley, between the Hohgant, Schybegütsch and Schrattenfluh massifs, this circular trail snakes its way along the Emme to Kemmeriboden and back again. The first section is easier, but the second stretch is undulating: a challenge even for seasoned cross-country skiers.

Description

The source of the Emme – 82 km long – is in the Hohgant massif. The river gives its name to the Emmental Valley, through which it flows on its way to join the river Aare. As you follow this trail from Bumbach to the headwaters of the Emme, the merry gurgling of the river will resound in your ears. The route twists and turns past splendid farmhouses. In view: the Hohgant massif and, on the other side, the jagged Schrattenfluh.

The first section of the trail between Bumbach and Bödeli sets easy to moderate requirements – ideal for novices or seasoned athletes to warm up. The subsequent stretch from Schwandweid to the Kemmeriboden-Bad area is rather undulating, presenting a challenge even to experienced cross-country skiers. On arriving, you deserve a break – perhaps to sample a traditional Kemmeriboden meringue. Renowned as a spa in the 1980s, this spot has become a favourite destination for outings nowadays. The therapeutic mineral spring, discovered almost 300 years ago, is still used by the country inn.

Two more inns invite you to pause for sustenance: one is located along the route in Bumbach, and another near the starting-point, right next to the ski lift on the other side of the Emme. You can shorten the full circular trail at various points, or you can finish at one of the four PostBus stops.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
