Geo-Route
Overview
Intro
Mysteries beneath the surface: ride the banks and shores, valleys and hills of the Thurgau by bicycle and discover what is hidden beneath the gentle surface of the pre-alpine region between Rorschach and Schaffhausen.
Description
Just as the landscape above ground is dominated by round forms, the rocks beneath the surface are also predominantly rounded: grit, gravel and sand. Sometimes they are solidly packed together and even form smaller rock faces, sometimes they are loosely distributed. In other places they are meticulously sorted according to size. Many people know that gravel and sand are transported by rivers and are therefore often found in riverbeds. But how did these vast quantities of gravel and sand end up on top of the highest hills in Thurgau? The mystery of the round stones leads you to the tracks of giant glaciers, to broad streams rushing towards the Mediterranean and even to the bottom of the sea.
The Geo-Route follows these tracks. It takes you on an exciting voyage of discovery through the varying geology and captivating landscape of the Thurgau. In Märstetten you can look directly into the groundwater of the Thur valley. The boulder fields in Schwaderloh are evidence of the passage of the Lake Constance glacier. High above the Seebach valley near Hüttwilen the route follows the edge to the former glacier for around four kilometres.
