Over gentle hills, passing tiny moraine lakes to «Chabisland» (cabbage country). An easy roll between clearly laid-out fields, silver planes waiting to take off in Belpmoos. Follow the River Aare at ground level, then ride through the lanes of Bern's UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Description
The church in Amsoldingen is over 1,000 years old, making it one of the twelve legendary “1,000-year-old churches around Lake Thun”. Interestingly, they are all designed to face the sunrise and are linked to one another along their longitudinal and transverse axes. It is now lost in the mists of time who had the churches built.
The journey along the two little moraine lakes in the Gürbetal valley and the Amsoldingersee and Uebeschisee lakes is scenic and serene. The Stockhorn mountain rises in the distance. By the Mülibach stream near the tiny lake of Dittligsee, you will find the Dittligmühle mill, a cosy, lovingly cared-for spot with a bistro and demonstration mill. By building number 4 on Gürbeweg, there is a sturdy wooden bridge across the river Gürbe. Pilgrims travelling along the Way of St. James pass by this point too en route to Wattenwil. Large amounts of peat were once mined here, but the landscape is now dominated by huge fields of cabbage. It is as if time has stood still here in “Chabisland”. Kirchenthurnen and Kaufdorf have also largely managed to retain their quaint, rural character. In Toffen, however, you will already see and feel the approaching metropolitan area of the federal capital.
Between Gürbe and Belpberg, the route leads through Belp into Belpmoos and therefore to the Bern-Belp Regional Aerodrome. An airport could hardly have a more idyllic setting. One observation tower gives views over the floodplain landscape along the Giesse, while the other looks out over the aeroplanes. Right next to the airfield, there is a field of barley that provides malt for local beer. You will come across another control tower in Wabern. This one belongs to the Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). The residential area is home to some beautiful old houses. Below flows the green river Aare, past the Gaskessel cultural centre, the Dampfzentrale club and Marzili lido, which are as much as part of Bern as the historic Mattequartier neighbourhood. Once you pass the Bear Pit and Nydeggkirche church via Klösterlistutz, you will already be in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old City. What more is there to say? Only that you will probably have already been captivated by the leafy, picturesque, cobblestone streets.
