Heiligkreuz-First-Winterwanderweg
Overview
Intro
The Heiligkreuz 'place of power' is a real gem in the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch. It promises not only a feeling of energy and peace, but also sporty winter hiking trails in pristine nature. This trail leads via the Reistegg up to the First. Both places offer glorious views of the Napf hills.
Description
There have always been places imbued with a special attraction. One such is the Heiligkreuz 'place of power'. Legend has it that an ox once settled here, carrying a piece of wood from the cross of Jesus between its horns. To this day Heiligkreuz (literally "holy cross") is a well-known place of pilgrimage, which will become familiar to you on this winter outing.
Shortly after setting off you pass the lower terminus of the Heiligkreuz ski lift, where you can watch skiers being hauled up the slope to the First. The trail continues along the snow-covered road, steadily rising past pretty holiday homes and chalets, then across open terrain to the Reistegg, where you make a turn and get wonderful views of the undulating Napf hills down to the Heiligkreuz 'place of power' and the wind turbines above Entlebuch. Equally impressive is the sight of the Millennium Cross at the Reistegg, which was created by the artist Hans Schöpfer to mark the turn of the millennium. The four arms of the cross symbolise the religious freedom enjoyed by people of all faiths in Switzerland.
Then you're in for another challenge: the footpath narrows and leads through the forest up to the First mountain restaurant at alt. 1437 metres. Here at the highest point of the outing, winter hikers have earned a break and a genuine Entlebuch-style coffee. Once again, the amazing views from the First reach as far as the Napf hills and all the way to the Jura chain. In the other direction, you see the Schafmatt mountain range adjacent to the mighty Schimbrig and the Risete range. Faced with these views, it's easy to pause longer than you mean to! After your break, you descend the sunny north slope next to the ski slope towards Kleine First, then through the woods to the Wurzilla fairytale trail for children. You finally arrive back to where you started in Heiligkreuz, passing the former holiday home of the Ingenbohl Sisters of Mercy and the Kurhaus.
