Randen Weg
Overview
Intro
One-day hike in the cultivated countryside of Randen, from Schleitheim through the valley, Randental, to the highest point of Randen at 912 m, from where, via Hagen, you reach Merishausen. The focal point of this hike is the impressive countryside and nature.
Description
Randen, the lime foothills of the Jura, stretch along the western part of the canton. Randen is known for its biodiversity. Many endangered or already extinct animals in the midlands can be found in large numbers on Randen. In spring you can see magnificent kinds of orchids. From May to June they display their beautiful colours.
The Randen trail begins at the Schleitheim post office. The village nestles in the Schleitheim Valley, surrounded by districts of Randen and Staufenberg, where the path starts to climb. You follow the edge of the forest and cross Birbistel hill, heading for Beggingen. Along the way, you have views of the Wutach Valley, the Black Forest and the Klettgau Valley. Like all villages ending in «-ingen» also Beggingen illustrates the home of Alemannic roots. From Bekko we have Beckingen and later on Beggingen. From here, you climb over the Schwedenschanze, or Swedish Rampart: a name that recalls the incursion by a Swedish army during the Thirty Years' War (1618–48).
The ascent of the Schwedenschanze to the tower,Hagenturm, is rewarded with magnificent views of the Swiss Alpine panorama and the Black Forest. 225 steps take you up to the 40-meter high steel viewing platform, with panoramic information panels and seating at the top. Mount Hagen is the highest point in the canton of Schaffhausen. The way to Merishausen leads over Hagen and Berglen and through the valley, Gugertal, and along Schlothalde. The high street in Merishausen, an Alemannic linear village, is lined by typical houses in the original style of the Alemanni. The stable is on the ground floor with the living accommodation above.
