From Romanshorn the route climbs to the imposing moated castle of Hagenwil, and on over green hills. Then down and over the Thur, a tamed river. Soon visible, the old medieval town of Wil, centre of the Fürstenland region.
Description
After the 1841 construction of the new port in Romanshorn and the arrival of the railway, the village became a traffic junction. You join cyclists on Route 5 to head up to Schloss Hagenwil, an imposing moated castle with a drawbridge.
On over green hills, passing rows of plastic greenhouses, tiny hamlets with romantic timber-framed houses and over a knoll with a stunning view of the lake and the Säntis. Down in Kradolf you cross the Thur where the once untamed river flows into the plain and is diverted into an artificial bed.
After the quaint hamlet of Buhwil begins a stamina-testing 200-metre uphill section, the eyes can rest on the distant ruins of Anwil. The mystery of the large, peaty meadows at Wuppeau: in 1470, Abbott Ulrich Rösch had a fish pond built, the dam burst in 1800. Wil soon comes into view, centre of the Fürstenland region with a medieval old town enthroned on a hill.
