Overview
Intro

The Viamala Gorge at a glance
The Viamala Gorge is located between Thusis and Zillis in Graubünden. Glacial ice and the Hinterrhein have carved the gorge, which is up to 300 metres deep, into the rock over thousands of years. The name means "bad road" in Romansh and is reminiscent of the times when muleteers and travellers feared the narrow passage on the way to the Alpine passes.
What to experience
Descent into the gorge (30-45 minutes)
From the visitor centre, 359 steps lead you down into the heart of the gorge. Below you can see directly into ancient rock cirques formed by the water and onto smoothly polished rock faces. Historic bridges and life-size figures on mule tracks in the rock face impressively show you how dangerous the passage was for centuries.
- Good to know: Public guided tours take place every Thursday in summer.
- Tip: Book a combined ticket with the bath in Andeer or the church of St. Martin in Zillis.
Family adventure in the gorge
Equipped with a treasure map, you descend the stairs with your children and solve puzzles together along the way. At various stations in the gorge, clues await you that lead to the hidden treasure. This makes the forces of nature of the gorge tangible for you and your children. The treasure hunt is suitable for 7 to 12-year-old children.
- Good to know: The treasure map is available at the ticket office in the visitor centre.
