This is Saas-Grund
Saas-Grund is a family-friendly holiday resort where the gondola takes you to a playground in summer and the ski slopes in winter. The village lies at 1,559 metres on the valley floor of the Saas Valley in Valais, directly below Saas-Fee.
Discover Saas-Grund
The traditional village centre of Saas-Grund is made up of old houses and narrow lanes. The church has an Italian-style bell tower, built to honour the close ties with the neighbouring Italian valleys. From the village, take the gondola up to the Kreuzboden middle station. In summer, your children can play at the lakeside playground and pet pygmy goats near the mountain restaurant.
18 peaks over 4,000 metres
Hohsaas is the mountain station above Saas-Grund at 3,142 metres. All around you are 18 mountains rising above 4,000 metres. The highest is the Dom at 4,545 metres. Along the Trail of the 18 Four-Thousanders, information boards explain the special features and history of the peaks. On the way, you can place a stone on the cairn at the wishing stone and make a wish.
Skiing and tobogganing with the whole family
The ski area stretches from the Hohsaas mountain station down to the valley. In between lies Kreuzboden, where children can take their first steps on skis. From Kreuzboden, you can toboggan 11 kilometres back to Saas-Grund. The toboggan run leads through a larch forest and past small hamlets. Toboggans can be hired at the valley station of the mountain railway.
Around Saas-Grund
From Kreuzboden, hike along the high-altitude trail across Alpine pastures to the car-free mountain village of Gspon. From there, a cable car takes you down to Stalden. In summer, take the PostBus to Lake Mattmark, home to Europe's largest earth dam. A hiking trail leads around the lake. In winter, you can follow the cross-country ski trail along the valley floor to Saas-Balen or Saas-Almagell.
