A tour of discovery in Mendrisiotto
Overview
Intro
Discover Mendrisiotto by bike and enjoy regional delicacies. The guided tour on bright red bicycles leads through the southernmost region of Switzerland, past quaint villages, through picturesque vineyards and to breathtaking viewpoints. On the way, guests will recharge the batteries with specialties from the region.
Mendrisiotto, the southernmost region of Switzerland, is a great choice for a culinary discovery tour by bike. A local guide leads guests from one stop to the next on the approximately 25km tour, sharing interesting information about the region along the way.
The meeting point for the Bike’n’discover tour is Galleria Baumgartner, a unique model railway exhibition. After a visit to the museum, the tour begins. Equipped with a red bike and helmet, guests ride from Mendrisio towards Riva San Vitale until they reach Lago di Lugano. Here, visitors can enjoy a light breakfast and put their skills to the test with a traditional game of bowls.
The tour continues along the shore of the lake to Brusino Arsizio. Easy work is made of the ascent up to Monte San Giorgio by taking the cable car. Thanks to its fossils and geologically interesting area, the mountain is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The group will reach Hotel Serpiano after a short ride. An aperitif on the panoramic terrace with a splendid view of Lago di Lugano will provide an energy boost for the onward journey,
cycling on through the cool forest to Meride. The village at the foot of the Monte San Giorgio is part of the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS) of national importance and is shaped by viticulture. The village centre with its stately buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries along the main street and the narrow side streets takes guests back in time. At the Antico Grotto Fossati, just outside Meride, a traditional lunch awaits in the shaded courtyard.
Finally, the group will enjoy a wine tasting at Museo Vela and toast the successful tour.
Getting there: about 20 minutes by train from Lugano. Then walk 250 metres to Galleria Baumgartner.
