Wake up in the Sulzerareal district

It’s hard to think of a lovelier way to start the day than on the roof terrace of Winterthur’s “Depot 195” hostel. Feel the first rays of sun on your skin, sip a hot chocolate or a cappuccino and look forward to an exciting day in Winterthur. “Depot 195” is located in the former Sulzerareal industrial district, right by the train station and, with its individually designed bedrooms, is not just a good choice for overnight stays with the family.

The trendy Sulzerareal district is home to students, designers and entrepreneurs. The microcosm where locomotives and steam engines were built in the past is alive and well and an ideal place for creative ideas. The Sulzerareal is also the perfect starting point for a discovery tour of the whole city.

So, helmet on and saddle up! The first stage passes through the Sulzerareal district via the railway station and directly to the old town area. Winterthur is not just a city for families, but also the most bicycle-friendly city in Switzerland and is best explored on two wheels.

Colourful old town

The old town is a charming place with its compact rows of houses; the narrow streets and alleyways, the secluded courtyards and squares. One of these narrow streets is Steinberggasse. You should definitely take the time for a visit there. It is home to an interesting mix of shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars. A market is held on the wide street twice a week. There are also some fabulous fountains. Time to fill your water bottle and move on.

Natural and technical phenomena

Winterthur scores highly for its big city vibe and small-town manageability. Everywhere is within easy reach. Particularly by bike. That’s why it’s only a short ride to the Technorama, even though it is a bit outside of the city. The Swiss Science Center Technorama, to give it its official title, allows visitors to experience hundreds of phenomena drawn from nature and technology. This is a place where children and adults are invited to touch everything and experiment.

The park adds a new dimension to the Technorama Centre.

The Technorama is going green

With over 500 exhibits, the Technorama has long been one of the largest science centres in Europe and has become even bigger since April 2021. The Technorama is going green and with its new outdoor park, it makes a great destination for a fine-weather excursion. The “Technorama Outdoors” allows visitors to experience a wide variety of natural phenomena in the open. The winding paths of the 15,000 square metre park open up new perspectives through a dense forest of posts, in meadows or on the banks of a pond. There are 30 new exhibits and artworks dotted around the park.

The Bridge of Miracles sets new standards.

The undisputed highlight of the park is the Bridge of Miracles. It measures 130 metres long and 17 metres high. It offers plenty of space for experiments in the treetops. The power of five tonnes of water is demonstrated in an impressive way on the bridge. Visitors can see for themselves what happens when five tonnes of water are suddenly dumped from a huge tank onto the ground. All we’ll say is: prepare to get wet!
