Giw Enduro
Overview
Intro
Surrounded by Bietschhorn, Weisshorn and many other peaks the tour from Giw to Visp is an absolute enduro highlight. Full of turns and challenging at times, then slow and comfortable or flowing – the 1200 m downhill has everything an enduro trail is expected to have.
Description
From Visperteminen, known for the Heida white wine growing here in Europe’s highest vineyard, a chairlift takes the bikers to the Giw station at the top. The terrace of the mountain restaurant is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee and bask in the views of the Weisshorn, the Mischabel group and the striking Bietschhorn.
The trail fun already begins in Giw. A first section leads through Bawald forest down to Muttji. The trail is wide, mostly downhill and clearly laid out. It leads along the old sledding run and as it heads toward Hotee it crosses the Bodmeri-Niwa channel several times. The channel begins here in Muttji. Built in 1915, it carries water from April to September, which is channelled through a tunnel from Nanztal Valley to Visperterminen. Then the trail becomes flatter, crosses the Ried River and a clearing and arrives at the Bodmen hamlet where views of the Saas and Zermatt Valleys can be enjoyed. Aara on the Bodmeri-Niwa channel is a very picturesque hamlet. Far down in the rocks the Eyholz Tunnel is visible with the Swiss national highway.
Some tighter turns follow before the trail enters the Teelwald forest in Visp. After Hotee the single trail then turns into a genuine enduro gem, winding its varied way through the forest and running partly through exposed terrain. The tour finally arrives in the valley and ends in Visp. A visit to the historic centre should not be missed. The old part of the village is charming and has an Italian atmosphere. Many restaurants with outdoor seating are available here.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
