At the foot of the Säntis you reach the winter-sports resort of Wildhaus, in the heart of idyllic Toggenburg with the imposing Churfirsten peaks across the valley. Wildhaus is an ideal spot from which to extend the tour on the Wildmannli-Route to Sargans or St. Gallen.
Description
Hemberg, where the houses are adorned with flowers as is typical of Toggenburg, is a high-altitude resort known for its healthful climate. At 945 metres above sea level, there are many different hiking routes that you can embark on from here. The orchard with its native heritage varieties of fruit, wild fruit and berries is a popular getaway.
It’s easy riding along a surfaced road to begin with. A gentle ascent is followed by the descent to Ennetbühl. The impressive peaks of the Churfirsten will already be in sight as you cycle past Nesslau from above and continue on to Stein. From there the route follows the river Thur, sometimes closely and sometimes straying from its course. By the time you reach Alt St. Johann, you will have covered around 30 kilometres and 1,000 metres of elevation. In other words, time for a break.
Once refreshed, it’s time to tackle the climb to the Gräppelensee lake. Passing between Mittelberg and Lauiberg, as well as the Alpstein massif, you will feel far from civilisation of any kind. It’s a fast-paced descent to Laui. Cross the Säntisthur river and get the final climb to Gamplüt out of the way.
With views of the Säntis and Churfirsten range, this is another good spot for a break. Four kilometres further and after 300 metres of elevation, you will arrive at Wildhaus, your destination for this stage and the highest holiday resort in Obertoggenburg, located at the pass to the Rhine valley.
