Intro

Hidden somewhat between Monte Tamaro and Monte Lema is the Malcantone region. The unspoilt area is ideal for mountain bikers and forms the basis for the fourth stage of the Lugano Bike route.

Description

The last challenging ascent of the Lugano Bike route is coming up: 400 meters in altitude at the beginning of the fourth leg. From Miglieglia it runs uphill to Passo di Monte Faëta. Monte Lema is directly above us now, the downhill trail is in front of us. It meanders smoothly and playfully past Alpe di Monte through the dense forest down to Astano, just one of the many picturesque villages in the Malcantone. Soon after, we reach the villages of Sessa and Molnazzo, no less charming, on the banks of the Tresa river. Time seems to have stood still here, but pleasantly so. While the last four days on the Lugano Bike route were rather spirited, it now ends quite leisurely, along the Tresa river, taking us directly to the shores of Lago di Lugano in the town of Ponte Tresa. The alpine area at Monte Tamaro has given way to a Mediterranean ambiance, which couldn’t make for a better finish of the Lugano Bike route – with “gelati” and cappuccino on the piazza of Ponte Tresa. For the return to Lugano it is best to take the small regional train and bypass the rather heavily used roads.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
