Lugano's Lakefront Promenade
Overview
Intro
Walk along the lakeside promenade of Lugano. It runs between the local mountains Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè across the entire bay and is lined with azaleas and camellias. Treat yourself to a gelato and watch the pedal boats.
Lugano's Lakefront Promenade at a glance
A large part of the lakeshore in the city area is encompassed by the lakeside promenade, from Paradiso in the southwest to the mouth of the Cassarate in the east. The wide riverside path connects green spaces, jetties and sculpture gardens to form a kilometre-long promenade. In the mild climate of Ticino, even palm trees grow here.
What to experience
Walk along the shore (30 minutes)
Start from Paradiso for a short walk towards the city centre. In the Parco Belvedere, sculptures by modern sculptors await you directly on the lake between camellias and magnolias. At the end of the long park, Piazza Luini opens up with the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli.
- Good to know: The most important Renaissance painting in Switzerland hangs in this church.
Take a break at Parco Ciani
At the eastern end of the promenade, Parco Ciani spreads over more than 63,000 square meters. On wide walking paths you stroll between flowers and English lawns, past shady oaks, lime trees and plane trees. In the middle of it all is the Villa Ciani. The 19th-century mansion is used for exhibitions.
- Good to know: From November to February, the park closes at 9 pm.
- Tip: Take a souvenir photo in front of the iron park gate with the lake in the background.
By boat to Gandria (30 minutes)
You will take the scheduled boat to the fishing village of Gandria, which lies steeply above the water on the slope. In the high season, there are several restaurants to choose from. Return by boat or bus. While the ships are barrier-free, the stair-filled village is unsuitable for wheelchair users.
- Good to know: From November to Easter, the ships will operate on a restricted basis.
- Tip: If you buy the outward and return journey and stay seated, you turn it into a round trip.
