Intro
This circular hike starts in Stein am Rhein and initially follows the left bank of the Rhine via the former Wagenhausen Priory to Heimishofen railway bridge, built in 1875. Hikers return on the opposite bank to the small mediaeval town of Stein am Rhein with its nostalgic ambience.
Description
The old town of Stein am Rhein features painted facades and half-timbered houses. This area and the Rhine Quay are wonderful places for a stroll at the start or end of the circular riverbank route.
Visitors enjoy unique views of the river's course throughout the hike. The awesome Hohenklingen Castle towers high above the waters (this is another excursion tip: it can be reached on foot or by car).
The idyllic church of Wagenhausen Priory is located directly on the bank of the Rhine. It is popular for weddings, and its bell – one of the oldest still working in Switzerland – bears the date of 1291, the year when the Confederation was founded.
The modern Rhine bridge affords a stunning panorama of the river and the historic iron structure of the old railway bridge (now a railway museum).
