Description
The hike begins on the edge of the small and lively town at the Rotenhausen Bridge. As soon as you cross the Thur, the path leads directly into a green area. At Bussnang the trail switches back to running alongside the river and the path leads into the forest for a short section.
You continue through fields to the customs house. This crossing over a channelled part of the Thur is one of the oldest structures in the Thurgau cantonal road network. The Thurweg trail is characterised by various bridges on the Thur which had important functions. However, this customs house bridge had a particular significance. From 1837 to the middle of the 20th century, it was the main transport connection in the canton of Thurgau. Until 1954, the bridge carried east-west traffic over its carriageway.
The trail then leads along the edge of the forest through fields until you find yourself in front of the next historical bridge - a 174-metre-long truss bridge from 1907. After crossing the Thur, the hike passes through the Hasli retention basin. This approximately 40-hectare basin serves to regulate the water and protect against extreme flood events.
At Pfyn, you cross the Thur one last time. The route to the destination for this stage is impressive with a lush and peaceful landscape. The Allmend Nature Reserve stretches out in front of you just before Frauenfeld. These are pasture and forest areas that were previously used jointly for economic purposes by members of a residents’ association. Today, the Allmend near Frauenfeld is a floodplain protection area and also a training area for the military.
After a final short section, you reach the destination for this stage, Frauenfeld, where sights such as Frauenfeld Castle and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas are worth a visit.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
