Thurweg
Overview
Intro
The Thur is reached through the Murg-Auen-Park in Frauenfeld. After a short detour to Ittingen Charterhouse, the trail rejoins and follows the river. At the hamlet of Fahrhof, the straightened river course gives way to the natural, meandering Thur.
Description
The penultimate stage of the Thurweg trail begins in the capital of the canton of Thurgau. The route leads directly through the Murg-Auen Park past the Allmend Nature Reserve. Historically, these are pasture and forest areas that were previously used for communal purposes by members of a residents’ association. Today, the Allmend near Frauenfeld is a floodplain protection area and also a training area for the military.
After crossing the Thur for the first time, the path leads to the Ittingen charterhouse, a former Carthusian monastery with a history dating back 850 years. This complex, located in Warth, is one of the most important cultural monuments in the region and today serves as a cultural and meeting centre with a museum, hotel, restaurant and gardens. The hops for Ittingen Amber beer, which is known throughout Switzerland, are also grown here.
You reach Uesslingen along the monastery vineyards, passing through agricultural pastures. You cross the Thur again here. The hike continues on the left bank to the next bridge. After changing sides again, you reach the Schäffäuli floodplain area. On the way, the Thur correction becomes unmistakably visible. The path often leads directly along the dam, next to the foothills of the Thur and the inland canal on the opposite side. Thanks to this correction, the cultivated land behind it can now be used for agriculture.
The first Thur correction dates back to 1867, when the canton of Thurgau was founded. During the course of the 19th century, the Thur wound through the Thur valley in extensive meanders and often caused flooding in the residential areas. Structures at certain points directed the floodwaters to the next community, which which caused ongoing disputes. These have since been settled.
The stage continues by following the loops of the Thur through forested sections, meadows and nature reserves. The last Thur crossing leads directly to Andelfingen Castle. Andelfingen is spread across several levels of terrain on the steep slope above the river. The area is characterised at the highest point by the church district. Farmhouses in typical regional timber-frame construction are grouped around it. The covered wooden bridge over the Thur bears witness to Andelfingen’s long settlement history as a bridge and customs place serving as a regional centre.
Andelfingen Castle towers above the bridge and the old mills. The castle has an attractive and well-maintained castle park, which is still one of the most important in Switzerland. The park is open to the public during the day, all year round. In winter, cultural events take place in the rooms of the castle.
