Landscape of the Year 2023 - Klettgau

The Swiss Foundation for Landscape Protection has named the Klettgau, or "s'Chläggi" in dialect, in the canton of Schaffhausen as Landscape of the Year 2023. The award recognizes the exemplary partnership between agriculture and nature protection in the heart of the granary of the canton of Schaffhausen.

Landscape of the Year 2022 - Val de Ruz

The Swiss Foundation for Landscape Protection has awarded the "Landscape of the Year 2022" prize to the avenue landscapes in Val-de-Ruz. Landscape of the Year 2020

The irrigation landscapes of the sunny mountains known as the Sonnenberge (Naters, Ausserberg, Eggerberg and Baltschieder) in Upper Valais are unique cultural landscapes that have emerged over centuries thanks to conventional irrigation and agricultural methods. This valuable cultural heritage has now been selected by the Swiss Foundation for Landscape Conservation as Landscape of the Year 2020.

The expansive network of highland and lowland moors with wooded areas is typical of the moorland forests of Ibergeregg Pass in the Canton of Schwyz. 2016: Isenthal wild hay making landscape

Wild hay making in Isenthal valley in the Canton of Uri has a centuries-long tradition and is still practiced today in almost the same way. Every summer farmers climb to the high Alpine meadows to cut the grass by hand with a scythe. What better than the nostalgic smell of fresh hay on long mountain hikes in late summer?

2015: Innerrhoden’s scattered agricultural settlements

Appenzell’s sparsely populated landscape is one of the most distinctive Swiss flagship landscapes. Although the houses appear to be placed at random at first glance, they were in fact purposely built in the locations on which families depended for their livelihood. The landscape represents the traditions, regional architecture and rural-agricultural character of Switzerland.

2014: Valle di Muggio

Valle di Muggio is Switzerland’s southernmost valley, stretching from the Breggia Gorge to Monte Generoso. It features a surprisingly intact, cultural and diverse landscape. Wet and dry woodlands flourish in abundance on the steep and undulating contours of the limestone foothills. The historic mule trails on the former terraces are a tempting alternative for hikers.

2013: “Campagne genevoise”

The term “campagne” refers to typically rural landscapes, in contrast to urban environments. This idyllic landscape has been inspiring the citizens of Geneva for many years. This agricultural production area serves the population as a recreational area, as well as providing an important habitat for many types of flora and fauna.

2012: Birspark landscape

The urban Birspark landscape in the cantons of Baselland and Solothurn stretches from the Angenstein at the mouth of the Laufental valley to where the river Birs meets the Rhine. It forms the backbone of green and sustainable urban development and is to be made accessible to the entire surrounding area. Many public spaces provide welcome places to relax and recharge your batteries.

2011: Val Sinestra

The lower part of Val Sinestra is an eroded valley with densely wooded, steep slopes and sometimes hard to reach sides. The landscape opens up in the upper part of the valley, alternating between forests, meadows and pastures. Val Sinestra is known not only for its mineral springs, but also for the impressive natural earth pyramids below Prà San Peder and the incredible variety of flora. The wildly romantic Val Sinestra is a delight for hikers.
