A trip back in time to Fribourg in 1606
Overview
Intro
The latest attraction in the city of Fribourg – Espace 1606 – takes us on a journey back to the year 1606, and shows us what the bilingual city looked like then based on a model made from an original etching by copper engraver Martin Martini.
Covering a total of 52 square metres, the model is twelve metres long by seven metres wide. It features the architecture and topography of the city of Fribourg in the 17th century. Each detail has been painstakingly reproduced: 14 metre city walls and more than 7,000 different parts, such as gothic houses, towers and gardens have been recreated in loving detail, so that you can truly immerse yourself in mediaeval Fribourg.
New technologies have been combined with the history of the city established during the dynasty of the House of Zähringen so that visitors can be whisked away into medieval times using multimedia and interactive elements. Espace 1606 is the result of years of work: it took 12 years of planning and work to create.
A visit to Espace 1606 is a unique learning experience. A light and audio show guides visitors through space and time for an hour. The exhibition also depicts the history, culture, activities and society of the city and the Fribourg region.
