Intro

Visit the Fraumünster at the Münsterhof in Zurich's Old Town. The church houses five coloured Chagall windows in the choir as well as a stained glass by Augusto Giacometti – and in the crypt over 1200 years of city history.

The Fraumünster at a glance

The Fraumünster in Zurich's old town was founded in the 9th century as a women's monastery. The Romanesque choir and the Gothic transept characterise the church interior. Five stained glass windows by Marc Chagall shine in the choir and a stained glass by Augusto Giacometti in the north transept. Below the choir is the crypt with the oldest remains of the abbey's walls.

What to experience

The Stained Glass Windows by Chagall and Giacometti (30–45 minutes)

In the choir there are five tall, narrow stained glass windows by Marc Chagall, each with its own colour and a biblical theme – from the Jacob's window to the Christ window. In the southern transept, Chagall's rosette is added. In the north transept you will find the stained glass by Augusto Giacometti.

  • Good to know: Photography without flash and tripod is allowed for private purposes.

Discover the Crypt Museum (30 minutes)

Below the choir is the crypt – the oldest surviving part of the church. A multimedia exhibition takes you through more than 1200 years of Zurich's city and church history: From the founding of the abbey to the Reformation to today's parish church. Archaeological finds and animations show you the construction phases of the monastery.

  • Good to know: The visit to the crypt (not barrier-free) is included in the entrance fee.

Explore the cloister and Münsterhof

In the cloister that connects the Fraumünster with the Stadthaus, a fresco cycle by the Zurich painter Paul Bodmer shows the founding legend of the Fraumünster. Directly in front of the church is the Münsterhof, the historic main square of medieval Zurich. From the Münsterbrücke you can look out over the Limmat and the Grossmünster.

  • Good to know: The cloister and the cathedral courtyard are freely accessible.
