Intro
The Hunwiler Höhe is a popular hiking destination. Hikers can enjoy a splendid view from the Alpstein to Lake Constance from the summit of the pyramid-shaped elevation. Just as well known, as the mountain is the restaurant at its summit, where various specialties await the hungry hiker.
Description
This trail begins directly at Zürchersmühle station and first crosses the Urnäsch and then follows a small river in an easterly direction. A part of the first ascent to the hamlet of Ramsten passes through woodland, which is particularly pleasant in summer. The trail now follows the range of hills to their highest point. Impressive conglomerate rock faces and idyllic alpine meadows are the dominating features here. Even at this height, you have a broad view over the hilly Appenzellerland. From the Hundwiler Höhe you can also view the Alpstein, with Kronberg and Säntis as significant points.
The descent back to the starting point follows a smaller range of hills, initially through a light forest and then over alpine meadows. If the cows are on the meadows here in summer, you can enjoy the sounds of their cowbells in the middle of this delightful, almost unspoilt landscape. You can look out over the many farmhouses, loosely distributed throughout the whole of the Appenzellerland. According to legend, a giant once wandered through the region with a sack full of farmhouses. What he did not realise was that the sack had a hole in it, and that is how the houses came to be spread over the entire area.
