Description
The Kronberg is easily reached by cable car from Jakobsbad. Once at the top, magnificent views of the Alpstein open up: the mighty Säntis north face soars before one's eyes. In the background lies the Lake Constance region, often enveloped in fog during winter. The well-prepared winter hiking trail leads up the Kronberg ridge to the summit cross, where you have magnificent 360-degree views over the snow-covered hills of the Appenzeller Vorderland. This is also where the fun begins for sledge riders. The longest toboggan run in eastern Switzerland leads mainly parallel to the winter hiking trail.
On the broad Kronberg ridge, you quickly lose altitude. After a short, steep section, you come to the St. Jakob's Chapel, which sits nicely atop a small hill. The little chapel dates back to the 13th century and owes its patron saint to the nearby Jakobsquelle spring. Continue on to the Scheidegg mountain inn, ideally suited for your next break. After a short stretch of forest, you reach the Hütten area with its rolling hills and snow-covered pastures. The well-preserved alp buildings serve as quarters for alpine summering. The route descends gently past the Ros property. There you leave the pastures and turn onto the narrow field road in the forest. On the last section, the trail winds down into the valley and crosses the Weissbach stream with its spectacular ice formations.
