Description
Sennwald is located at a scenic intersection: The municipality is spread across the Rhine Valley, stretching as far as the edge of the Alpstein massif. The districts of Sennwald, Frümsen, Haag, Salez and Sax combine historic character and local recreation. Haag, which has a high-tech industrial area, provides a contrast to the rural surroundings.
The stage to Wildhaus requires stamina: The transition from the St. Gallen Rhine Valley into Obertoggenburg covers more than 20 kilometres and around 1,200 metres of elevation. Most of the trail is shared with the Wildmannli Bike route. After around one hour, you reach the Frümsen cable car. This runs up to the Berggasthaus Staubern guest house, a starting point for tours to the Hohe Kasten or the Saxerlücke pass. The route itself remains at a lower elevation; stretches of forest alternate with views across the Rhine Valley.
The ruins of Hohensax castle are a historical highlight. They are perched on a narrow rocky ridge around 300 metres above the Rhine Valley and shape the landscape above Sax. Then, things get wilder: The trail takes you through the Gulatobel ravine, past the cascading waterfall of the Felsbach stream. From Hardegg, the route climbs 400 metres in elevation to the Schönebodesee. This is located in a hollow in a protected moor area and was created around 14,000 years ago after the glacier melted. The stage ends shortly after this in Wildhaus, the highest municipality in the Canton of St. Gallen and a well-known holiday resort at the foot of the Churfirsten.
