Intro
Gentle ascent through the idyllic rolling landscape of Bucheggberg to historic Buchegg Castle. Views over the Aare plain and Mittelland to the Jura and Weissenstein chain. Ideal spring tour when snow still lies in the higher regions.
Description
Büren an der Aare once lived from bridge tolls and the transport of goods on the river. Today's boat jetty was formerly a transhipment point for tobacco, wine, wood and colonial goods. With the construction of the railway in the 19th century, however, the town lost its role as a transport hub. But the old town still impresses visitors with its historic main street with arcades and Büren Castle.
Starting at the railway station, the route leads through the residential neighbourhood towards the Eichwald Forest. The Eichwald is significant due to over 100 years of oak farming, with many oaks of all ages represented in a relatively large area.
The route continues to Oberwil b. Büren, past stately farmhouses and through the next forests. You can make a detour to the Grabenöli – a well-preserved and listed walnut oil mill from the 16th century. Situated in the middle of a romantic valley on the Mülibach stream, it was used to produce oil from nuts and seeds. You can still buy nut oil or nut pomace today to bake delicious cakes. In Lüterswil-Gächliwil in Solothurn, you will be halfway through the stage.
Further on, forest roads alternate with clearings and paved roads. Time and again, the Bucheggberg offers stunning views over the Aare plain and the Mittelland to the Jura or the Alps.
Shortly before reaching the stage destination, you pass Buchegg Castle. The castle – or rather "Schlössli" (little castle) –once served as a prison tower. Today, only a few wall sections remain of the medieval castle complex. Until 1383, a large castle complex stood there, the seat of the Counts of Buchegg, whose dominion encompassed large parts of the Bucheggberg and the adjacent Limpach Valley.
Shortly afterwards, you reach the stage destination at Bätterkinden. Although separated by the Emme River, the two neighbouring villages of Bätterkinden and Utzenstorf have almost grown together.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
