Overview
Intro
The route between the Luzern hinterland and the upper Emmental region of Bern leads over hills, apart from today’s traffic stream, to Ufhusen and Huttwil. Worthwhile detour to the Jakobskapelle (St James’ Chapel) in Bösegg with a portrayal of the «Miracle of the Gallows».
Description
Willisau lies at the foot of the Napfbergland. The small medieval town is famous for its ring-shaped biscuits with a hard texture, called Willisauer Ringli, which were even included in the inventory of the culinary heritage of Switzerland.
Setting out from the railway station, you reach the eastern town gate, which marks the entrance to the medieval old town. It's well worth taking a detour into the Müligass. After the second town gate, the path leads slightly uphill past the Hirschpark to the Gütsch. Here you can enjoy magnificent views over Willisau and the castle grounds to the Alps. The way continues into the Willbrigwald forest.
The hike leads gently up and down past several picturesque farms to Ufhusen. The Alps and especially the Pilatus remain in plain sight. Fields, pastures and short forest sections alternate. Shortly before Ufhusen, you cross Luthern and walk through the massive Hüswil gravel works. Ufhusen lies at the end of the ridge in a spectacular setting with panoramic views. In addition to the Alps, the Jura is now also visible.
Near the southern edge of the Chilchwäldli, one wooden sculpture follows another on the Wooden Wonder Trail. The scenic stage ends in the historic country town of Huttwil in the lower Emmental. After the great fire of 1834, the town centre was reconstructed in a uniformly classicist style. The National Sports and Cultural Centre attracts teams from all over Switzerland.
