Intro

The Treasure Chamber of the Principality of Liechtenstein is located in the heart of the Liechtenstein capital, Vaduz. The little museum exhibits unique treasures that are closely associated with Liechtenstein and that cannot be found anywhere else in this form and combination.

In addition to objects owned by the State of Liechtenstein, exhibits from the Princely Collection are also on display at the Treasure Chamber. The latter include, for example, historical weapons, hunting knives and ceremonial gifts from kings and emperors such as Frederick the Great and Emperor Joseph II. Also on show are objects from the collection of Adulf Peter Goop, who gifted his collection to the State of Liechtenstein in 2010. These include the Apple Blossom Egg and other jewel-studded golden ornamental eggs from Fabergé and other Russian jewellers.

The permanent exhibition is entitled “The Principality, the World and Outer Space”. That is because the treasury also exhibits moon rock, which US President Richard Nixon presented to Liechtenstein.

Three of the 150 treasures

Ducal hat
The royal coronet, or “ducal hat” was commissioned by Prince Karl of Liechtenstein from the jeweller Daniel de Briers. It was made in Frankfurt am Main and Prague and completed in 1626. A replica of the coronet was made in 1978 to mark the 40th anniversary of Prince Franz Josef II von und zu Liechtenstein’s accession. It is decorated with 26 pearls, 30 large diamonds and 99 smaller diamonds and 16 rubies.

Apple Blossom Egg
The famous Apple Blossom Egg was created by Carl Fabergé and his master craftsman Michael Perchin (1901) and comes from the former collection of Adulf Peter Goop. It was commissioned by Alexander Ferdinandovich Kelch, who gave his wife a Fabergé egg every year from 1898 to 1904. The apple blossom egg is one of the most precious of the seven “Kelch” eggs from the Fabergé workshop in St Petersburg.

Moon rock
This moon rock from the Apollo 11 mission, along with the Liechtenstein flag that actually reached the moon in 1969, was a gift to the nation from Richard Nixon. The moon rock and the presence of the Liechtenstein flag on the moon were a tribute by the USA for the contribution made by Balzers AG (now part of OC Oerlikon) to the manned lunar landing. Balzers AG, a world leader in vacuum technology and the production of ultra-thin protective coatings, supplied important components for the Apollo programme.
