Lauterbrunnen
Intro
Lauterbrunnen has pretty much everything that makes Switzerland special, all in one place. Marvel at natural spectacles against an alpine backdrop. Stroll through picture-postcard villages. Take Switzerland’s most beautiful hiking and winter sports areas by storm. And experience the UNESCO World Heritage Jungfrau-Aletsch from up close.
This is Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen can be found in a valley of dramatic beauty between Interlaken and the Jungfrau Massif. You’d be hard pressed to find anywhere that feels as much like the Swiss Alps as this.
Discover Lauterbrunnen
One way to start your day could be with a stroll through the village, against the backdrop of the Staubbach Falls. Then the best photo spot can be found in the car-free postcard village Wengen. Depending on what takes your fancy at the time, either take the cogwheel railway to Kleine Scheidegg or the cable car to Mürren. The trip up to the Männlichen is worth the ride alone – on the roof of the cable car.
Waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen
The village gets its name – Lauter Brunnen (loud springs) – from the 72 waterfalls that can be found there. Its landmark is the Staubbachfall: see how it cascades 300 metres over the vertical rock face. The Mürrenbachfall, which plunges 750 meters into the depths in five cascades, is a mighty sight. The Trümmelbachfälle also lets you feel the tremendous energy of the water: the glacier water thunders through a labyrinth of rocks inside the mountain.
Wengen and Mürren
Enjoy the peace and quiet as well as the views available in the two car-free mountain villages that belong to the municipality of Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is on the sunny side and on the route to Grindelwald. From Mürren the cable car takes you up to Schilthorn with its revolving restaurant Piz Gloria. But before all that, why not take a selfie – with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the background?
