Splügen lies at 1,457 metres above sea level in the canton of Graubünden. The Alpine pass village is known for its well-preserved historic centre with Walser houses and the Via Spluga, which leads across the Alps to Italy.
Discover Splügen
On a walk through the old village centre, you’ll see narrow lanes, Walser houses and stately palazzi such as the Schorsch House. The Rheinwald Local History Museum is housed in the municipal building. Above the village are the ruins of Splügen Castle, right next to the Reformed church. The former customs building is a reminder of the goods once transported across the Alpine passes.
Historic Alpine pass village
For centuries, the transport of goods by pack animals shaped life in the village. After a major fire, the local population rebuilt the village on its old foundations. Splügen received the Wakker Prize for the exemplary preservation of its village character. Today, Splügen is a member of the «Most Beautiful Villages in Switzerland» association and lies within Beverin Nature Park.
Splügen Pass and Via Spluga
The Splügen Pass connects the village with Chiavenna in Italy and is popular with cyclists and motorcyclists in summer. Since the construction of the San Bernardino Tunnel, the pass road has become quieter, helping to preserve historic structures such as the Marble Bridge. The Via Spluga cultural hiking trail leads from Thusis via Splügen to Chiavenna, linking dramatic gorges and Alpine pass landscapes. Lake Ober Suretta at the Seehorn is a popular hiking destination.
Around Splügen
North of Splügen, the Viamala Gorge near Thusis impresses with rock walls rising up to 300 metres. Near Andeer, the Roffla Gorge features a rock passage and waterfall. Towards San Bernardino lies Lake Sufers, ideal for a walk by the water. In winter, the Splügen-Tambo mountain railways take you to the slopes at Piz Tambo; in summer, you can use them for hiking.
