Ballyana
Overview
Intro
For almost 200 years, the Bally shoe company has been key for the region and people of Niederamt in the canton of Solothurn. Schönenwerd and its surroundings lived to the rhythm of the Bally factory siren for decades.
The “Kingdom of Bally”, which offered its workers and employees a place to both live and work in the immediate vicinity, has left its mark on the village not only with first-class architecture such as the Kosthaus (1919) by Karl Moser. Archives, machinery and a unique shoe collection also bear witness to a long industrial history.
The Ballyana Foundation is committed to the preservation of this historical heritage. Visit the Ballyana Museum to experience how people used to work for yourself. Imagine the machines humming before your eyes, see the tools which speak of the importance of craftsmanship despite mechanisation, touch and smell pieces of leather.
The collection of old textile and shoe production machines in the former production hall of the Bally ribbon weaving mill is fascinating. Aside from the machines, many aspects of industrial history and culture are also on display: shoes, laces, boxes, advertising, souvenirs, letters and much more.
As a bonus, Ballyana is also exploring 150 years of men’s shoes through Bally models in the special exhibition “Bally Monsieur”.
Open every first and third Sunday of the month, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Guided tours available by appointment at any time. Parking available.
