Brasilia. 1960
In 1960, René Burri covered the inauguration of Brasilia for the French newspaper Paris Match. The new town -built by brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer- was designed as an architectural Utopia, in order to help refocus the economic activity. One of the 30,000 workers at the construction site showed his wife and children the results of his work during the inauguration day. In the background, we can recognize the National Congress of Brazil, the flagship work of Oscar Niemeyer. A quarter of the inhabitants of the new city did not get access to public housing, which was conceived for them. They live in the outskirts of town in makeshift baracks and can only come to admire the purified lines of the new capital.
