This still life with apples and figs belongs to the mature period of the major French Impressionist painter, who was severly affected by arthritis and was forced to cease painting en plein air. Nonetheless, he became even more productive, and thus were born many still lifes, both frontal and long-format, influenced by the elaborate Baroque style of Rubens, and the chromatic richness of Titian.
