The sculpture La Jambe (The Leg), realized in 1958, shows an isolated leg, separated from the rest of the body. Giacometti came up with this idea as early as 1947, the year when he created sculptures such as Tête d’homme sur tige (Head of a Man on a Rod) or Le nez (The Nose). The cause of these “isolated limbs”, on the one hand, was the collective post-war trauma following World War II, and on the other hand, his own traffic accident during the night of 10 October 1938 at Place des Pyramides in Paris.
