Here, you’ll find everything that feeds the stereotypes about Mexico: drug trafficking, armed violence, petty crime. It’s unusual for a teacher to request a transfer here of all places. Sergio (Eugenio Derbez) is an idealist. He wants to give the children—who are handed diplomas here through rigged final exams that are of no use to them—real prospects for the future. To do so, he clashes from the very beginning with his long-resigned colleagues and the school principal—and, against all odds, he achieves the impossible. La ley de HerodesDirected by: Luis Estradamit Starring: Damián Alcázar, Pedro Armendáriz Jr., Delia CasanovaMexicoOVd (Original version with German subtitles)Mexico, 1949: After the citizens of San Pedro de los Saguaros beheaded their mayor, the naive garbage collector and party supporter Juan Vargas (Damián Alcázar) is appointed the new town leader. He had originally set out to bring law and order as well as modernization to the dusty desert village, but Vargas quickly succumbs to the temptations of power. Armed with a revolver, a copy of the Mexican Constitution, and a hefty dose of corruption, he quickly learns the true law of the jungle. Anyone who doesn’t toe the line is made to fit in. Luis Estrada’s pitch-black political comedy is a razor-sharp, scathing satire on the abuse of power, political greed, and the legacy of the PRI regime in Mexico—humorous, cynical, and painfully accurate.
