Linocut and cyanotype. Between technology and nature. By Catherine Ruedisueli and Alessandro Cividini.

Catherine Ruedisueli and Alessandro Cividini will be exhibiting at our gallery from 9 to 30 August under the title "Linocut & Cyanotype – Between Technology and Nature."

Their works often emerge from shared conversations on a wide range of topics, many of them philosophical in nature. Curiosity and a joy of experimentation continually lead them to explore new forms of artistic expression. For this exhibition, they present works created using the techniques of cyanotype and linocut.

Catherine Ruedisueli

Originally from Fribourg, Catherine Ruedisueli has lived near Zug for more than twenty years and is delighted to present her latest works in Murten.

Both cyanotype and linocut are processes that unfold in several stages, with time playing a central role. In cyanotype, achieving the correct exposure time in sunlight is a particular challenge, while linocut offers the opportunity for the image to evolve gradually through reflection and careful craftsmanship.

Both techniques leave room for the unexpected, resulting in surprising and unique visual effects.

Alessandro Cividini

His works arise from the meeting of cyanotype and linocut—two techniques that preserve the value of craftsmanship, time, and material.

Through them, he explores the relationship between technology and nature, one of the defining tensions of our time, in which technology increasingly shapes everyday life. This dialogue creates a contrast reminiscent of Plato's reflections on the relationship between the psyche and nature. He understands boundaries not as obstacles but as opportunities for self-reflection.

Each work becomes a place of encounter: between human beings, what they create, and that from which they originate.

"Téchne d'anánkes asthenéstera makrô" can be translated approximately as:

"Technology is far weaker than necessity."

The quotation comes from the ancient Greek tragedy Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus. It reminds us that although technology makes many things possible, there are fundamental limits that it cannot overcome.
