The Forum of Swiss History Schwyz, located in the centre of Schwyz, is a modern museum of history and the headquarters of the Swiss National Museum in Central Switzerland. From the outside, the museum looks like a Baroque granary and armoury dating back to 1711, while it houses a modern museum of history inside.
The three upper floors are devoted to the exhibition “Switzerland in the Making”, which uses virtual guides, innovative multimedia stations and selected objects to trace the evolution of the old Confederation during the Middle Ages. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a medieval world as they witness a knight astride a horse getting ready for battle, hear a monk giving dictation in the scriptorium and encounter a mule driver on the Devil’s Bridge. The history of Switzerland has been designed as an adventure tour that conveys an emotional message to adults and children alike.
The regularly changing temporary exhibitions on the ground floor are of key importance to the region and to Central Switzerland, addressing current issues, which they present using modern technology. Visitors can round off their tour with a visit to the cosy museum cafeteria or shop.
