Furka Pass
Overview
Intro
Drive over the legendary Furka Pass and follow the route from the James Bond movie "Goldfinger". The pass is located between the Uri and Valais Alps. It offers you a unique view of glaciers and majestic four-thousand-metre peaks.
The Furka Pass at a glance
The Furka Pass connects Realp in the canton of Uri with Oberwald in Valais. At 2429 meters, it is one of the highest Swiss Alpine passes. The track became world-famous through the James Bond film "Goldfinger" from 1964. On the Valais side, the historic Hotel Belvédère is located in the middle of a hairpin bend. The pass is open from June to October.
What to experience
Pass ride over the Furka Pass (45–60 minutes)
The pass road winds through the alpine landscape in numerous curves. On the Uri side in the east, you pass the "Goldfinger Curve", where Sean Connery shot the classic film in 1964. At the top of the pass, the view opens up to the Gotthard massif. Shortly afterwards you will reach the Hotel Belvédère in the striking hairpin bend.
- Good to know: The pass is open from June to October, depending on snow conditions.
Ice Grotto and Glacier Trail on the Rhone Glacier (1–1.5 hours)
At the Hotel Belvédère, a path leads to the ice grotto. Every year, workers dig a new tunnel into the glacier ice. On an educational trail you will receive exciting information about the formation and retreat of the Rhone Glacier. 2 viewing platforms offer you an unobstructed view of the glacial lake and the source of the Rhone.
- Good to know: The ice grotto is open – depending on the weather – from June to mid-October.
- Tip: The Kneipp and Alpine Garden at the glacier lake invites you to refresh yourself.
By bus or steam train over the pass (1.5–2 hours)
You can also cross the Furka Pass by public transport. For example on the bus from Andermatt or Oberwald. The line crosses the pass and stops at the Hotel Belvédère. An alternative is the historic steam railway with the over 100-year-old locomotives. It runs on the old railway line.
- Good to know: The steam train runs from the end of June to the beginning of October.
- Tip: Combine bus and steam train for a round trip over the Furka Pass.
