On the Gotthard one of nature‘s exceptional treasures can be marvelled at: the giant crystals of the Planggenstock. They are displayed in the Sasso San Gottardo just as they were yielded up by the mountain: as a magnificent group of crystals.
For millions of years an unrivalled treasure has grown inside the Planggenstock in the Gotthard massiv. It was in 2008 that they crystals displayed here were discovered by Franz von Arx and his partner Elio Müller in a chasm about 60 metres inside the mountain. They are unsurpassed in terms of size, transparency, lustre and pure perfection.
The crystal group has a dimension of 3 by 3 metres, and the largest single crystal rises one metre high. The weight of the crystal group displayed is 1.5 tons.
An exciting film on this find of the century in the Planggenstock rounds off the newly designed display area. Visitors ride the Metro del Sasso into the historical section of the formerly top secret fortress. A side gallery leads to the new observation platform that offers spectacular views on the mountain world of the Gotthard
