Intro

In 1540 the Zug Council decided to erect a fountain on Linden Square and in the documentation there is mention of a painter, Anton, who presumably was given the contract to lay the foundations.

In 1541 the Lindenbrunnen, as it became known, was put into place. Various interpretations can be given to the figure standing above: it could be that of a standard-bearer or some other military personage, or even a member of the Kolin family. In this case it would seem most likely that the person we see there is Wolfgang Kolin, a standard-bearer and the architect of the nearby Hotel Ochsen. The other name given to the fountain, namely "Ochsenbrunnen", stems from this association with the hotel. The renaissance column of the fountain was restored in 1891 and in 1892 the statue was mounted in aluminium. Another more extensive renovation was put in hand in 1915 by the architect Emil Weber when the statue was mounted once again.
