Intro
The Kunstmuseum Bern brings together Hodler, Anker and Klee with Picasso, Oppenheim and contemporary artists. With over 50,000 works, his collection is one of the most important in Switzerland.
Kunstmuseum Bern – Art Museum at a glance
The museum on Hodlerstrasse is located on the edge of Bern's upper old town, just a few minutes' walk from the train station. The old building and extension offer 3500 square meters for a collection that ranges from the late Middle Ages to the present day. The Adolf Wölfli Foundation also keeps the estate of the Bernese draughtsman, poet and composer in the house.
What to experience
Swiss Art and International Modernism (1–2 hours)
The collection of the Kunstmuseum Bern is closely linked to the city and canton of Bern: You will encounter major works by Albert Anker, Ferdinand Hodler and Caspar Wolf. In addition, important works of Cubism by Picasso and Braque, Expressionism and Bauhaus are located here, including central works by Paul Klee.

Meret Oppenheim and Contemporary Art
Bern is home to the world's most extensive collection of Meret Oppenheim's works, with paintings, sculptures, jewellery designs and writings spanning 5 decades. Here you will discover the whole spectrum of an artist who was not so easy to assign to an art movement. In addition, you will find video and media art as well as works by contemporary artists.
- Good to know: The museum is a 10-minute walk from Bern train station.
- Tip: Visit the Oppenheim Fountain on Waisenhausplatz, just 200 meters from the museum.
