Intro

This is a dam made of debris from prehistoric landslides that separates the Klöntal and Linthtal valleys.

In the middle of the forest, an old stone arch bridge crosses the Löntschtobel. You will shudder as you peer into the depths and marvel at the power of the water. From here you can see the vertical flanks of the “Wiggis” and the mighty faces of the “Glärnisch”. The shady gorge stretches deep below the bridge, as the thundering Löntsch cuts its way through the limestone rock. There is an almost claustrophobic feel between these overpowering rock faces in the chasm of the “Choli-Loch”. From here there is not a single clue to suggest this majestic power, cold, calm and silence of this place with its unique light. It is hard to believe that a Russian army under General Suvorov passed through this gorge in 1799 with 20,000 men.

An impressive hike takes hikers from Netstal via the Löntschtobel to the idyllic shores of Lake Klöntal in one and a half hours.

Getting there: Take the Klöntal bus from Glarus station as far as the Riedern, Staldengarten stop. Alternatively, it is just a 30-minute walk from Riedern.
