In the Rosenlaui glacier gorge in the Bernese Oberland, the glacier water has formed a work of art made of rock over thousands of years. Experience the incredible power of water and follow the path through tunnels and past thundering waterfalls.
The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge at a glance
The glacier gorge is located in the Rosenlaui Valley (also called Reichenbach Valley) in the Bernese Oberland and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. A 573-meter-long path with tunnels and over 200 steps leads through the gorge. The tour is open from May to October.
What to experience
Walking tour of the gorge (45 minutes)
Climb stairs and through illuminated tunnels deep into the gorge. Waterfalls plunge into the depths next to you and the spray of the glacial water swirls through rock pools. After the ascent, a forest path leads back to the starting point.
- Good to know: Sneakers or hiking shoes and warm clothing are recommended.
- Tip: In some places, the tunnel ceilings are low – so duck your head.
Guided tour through the gorge and mountains (1.5–2 hours)
On a guided tour, you will delve deeper into the history of the gorge. You will learn exciting facts about the geology, the construction of the trail and early Alpine tourism. The tour also leads into the surrounding mountains with a view of glaciers and peaks.

Hike to Grosse Scheidegg (2.5 hours)
Via Schwarzwaldalp you hike through the Rosenlaui Valley up to the Grosse Scheidegg. The valley has always inspired painters and poets. The great contrast between the lovely valley and the imposing flanks of the Wetterhorn is impressive. From the top of the pass, take the B 128 bus to Grindelwald.
- Good to know: From May to October, the B 164 bus line runs from Meiringen to Schwarzwaldalp.
- Tip: There is a fire pit along the way with wood provided.
