A la riva dal Rom
Overview
Intro
A hike along the banks of the wild Rom, the main valley river in the Val Müstair. From its source to Müstair, the path meanders through a lovely river landscape with floodplains, gravel banks and flowering meadows. Information boards and a brochure offer insights into the eventful history, special habitats or legends associated with the Rom.
Description
The hiking trail "A la riva dal Rom" starts at the source of the Rom in Süsom-Tschierv and ends in Müstair, the easternmost village in Switzerland. It follows the Rom which rises below the Ofen pass near Tschierv and flows into the Etsch in Italy. What makes this river so special is the fact that it is under protection in the Swiss part, and therefore may not be diverted for power generation. Accordingly, it has been able to retain its freedom and flows wildly through the valley, past fens, over steep steps and through secluded floodplains. Life flourishes on its natural banks: orchids, hedge roses or buckthorn grow in the meadows, alders and larches in the forest. The local trout also finds an ideal habitat in this mountain river.
The hike starts in Süsom-Tschierv, in the area where the stream has its source. First you follow the left side of the river in the direction of Tschierv, then you cross the historic village centre of Chasuras. After Plaz, the route continues over the Palü dals Lias plain and past Fuldera. Following the river, you also arrive at Valchava and Sta. Maria. Although the trail does not lead directly to these two villages, it is worth taking a detour there. The hike ends at the medieval monastery of St. Johann in Müstair. A visit to this UNESCO world heritage site is like a journey through 1200 years of monastery, art and architectural history. The museum also offers insights into the past and present life of the Benedictine nuns in Müstair.
The hike is easy to manage and perfectly suitable for families with children. Parts of the route - the plain between Tschierv and Fuldera and in Müstair between the Schützenhaus and the school building - are also stroller-friendly. There are many places to rest along the way, and in Valchava and Müstair, there are playgrounds with barbecue areas right by the water. Of course, you will also find restaurants in the villages not far from the route where you can take a break. If you would like to get the information brochure "A la riva dal Rom" on the theme trail, you can obtain it free of charge from the tourist information office or the Center da Biosfera.
