Alp Garfiun
Overview
Intro
On this tour the Silvrettahorn and its glacier appear almost within reach. This impressive run along the upper reaches of the Prättigau valley gives even technically less accomplished bikers a fantastic experience of nature and mountain biking.
Description
The panoramic view of the Silvretta massif accompanies the route from the outset. From Klosters Platz, you cycle on surfaced roads up to Selfranga and past the golf course. Things get a little easier after this first climb: A wide forest path crosses the Ronenwald forest. You then reach open terrain, with a clear view of the lush meadows and Alpine pastures of the upper Prättigau. The striking Silvrettahorn towers behind, appearing even more majestic in the evening sun. Boulders of all sizes are dotted throughout the meadows. They were transported here by the glacier over hundreds of years.
A fast-paced descent on gravel trails takes you down to Monbiel. Here, the young Landquart river winds through a landscape of open forest and meadows. Gravel banks and alluvial forests line its course. A suspension bridge spans the Vereinabach stream. On the opposite side of the valley, you can stop at the Alp Garfiun restaurant for refreshments.
From here, you begin the long climb up the steep mountainside. Shortly before you reach its highest point, the route changes to a challenging single trail. This crosses mountain streams, avalanche tracks and forests. Roots and obstructed passages mean you need to choose a good line and have a secure riding technique. However, it’s also worth looking upwards. The view of the Gotschna area, to the Davos mountains and down into the valley over the Prättigau is unique. The final section down into the valley to Klosters Platz is a leisurely ride.
The loop can be tackled from early in the year. The springtime panoramic view of the snow-covered peaks at higher altitudes is particularly stunning and a scenic contrast to the green meadows in the valley.
